Walking (Ink) Meditations:  Prints and Artists Books

Leslie Ann Eliet will be exhibiting new prints, artists books and an installation in March at ReachArts Gallery at 89  Burrill St. in Swampscott, MA.

Eliet received her MA at Tufts University and studied under Kaji Aso at The School of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The present exhibition is the latest in a series of 17 Walking (Ink) Meditations, comprised of prints, installations and accordion books, inspired by the extended formats of Japanese folding screens and albums.   One of the pieces at ReachArtsWalking (Ink) Meditation, Part XVII:  March/Marsh, is a continuous strip taking up 33 feet of two adjacent walls. The works address the artists encounters with landscape in different parts of the world, as well as the marshes and woodland ponds of her home on the North Shore.  My work celebrates the almost forgotten quiet places small ponds with peepers in the spring, nesting colonies of migratory birds, ancient forests, prehistoric stone circles and barrows turned towards the sun, markers of the changing seasons.

Using a meditative approach to landscape both in encounters with nature and in the studio, Eliets images emerge by recalling such indefinable elements as quality of light, season, time of day.  They also incorporate memories and dreams, and are meant to evoke rather than describe. As Victor M. Cassidy wrote in Art in AmericaLeslie Eliets works are like chamber musicthey require close looking and much thought, but stay with us long after we leave.  This visual narrative suggests things that are hidden, secret and waiting.
